About Threshing Process
Threshing is the process of detaching the grains from the plants. This process involves separating grains from panicles, cobs and pods. Threshing is based on the principle that when,
- Some impact or pounding is given on crops, the grains are separated from panicles, cobs or pods.
- The crop mass passes through a gap between drum and concave, rubbing action takes place. This separates grains from panicles.
Thus, the rupture of the bond between the grains and ears is due to rubbing action and impact of beaters over grains.
The strength of the bond between the grain and the panicle depends upon:
- Type of crop
- Variety of crop
- Ripening phase of grain
- Moisture content of grain
The efficiency and quality of threshing depends upon:
- Drum speed
- Number of beaters
- Drum size
- Gaps between drum and concave
- Condition of plant mass fed to the thresher
- Direction of feeding and
- Rate of feeding
Various threshing methods are followed in India, those methods are manual, by animals and by machine.
Threshing by manual:
Manual method of Threshing is a slow process and requires more labor and time. Process of beating the harvest crops on a floor or beating with a stick is the method followed for small quantity of harvests.
Threshing by animals (bullock):
Threshing by animals is very common method used. The harvest is spread on a clean threshing space, the animals are tied in line one after the other with the help of a strong pole, fixed in the center of the threshing space. One man drives the animals from the back. Animals move on the harvest crops continuously till the grains are completely separated from straw.
Threshing by machines:
With the increase of mechanization in farms, threshing machines are getting popular day by day. Power thresher is used for threshing.
